At the beginning.
Select and clean the best walnuts. Then soak them in water for 2 days to ensure they are completely saturated.
Planting.
Plant the wet walnuts in a mixture of sand and black soil. Cover them with old leaves if necessary to prevent them from drying out. The container must be closable and able to ventilate. Ensure that the walnuts are protected against squirrels, mice, or birds.
European situation.
In the European situation, walnuts germinate quite late after the winter, with activities typically expected in the month of May.
In June.
In June, you can move the young seedling to a location free from birds and squirrels, as they may attempt to access the walnut still present during root initiation.
young seedlings.
Plant the young seedlings close together so that they support each other's growth, creating beautiful young walnut trees.
In the autumn
the seedlings can be lifted and transplanted, or used directly as rootstocks. In the photo, you can see two-year-old rootstocks ready for grafting.
Young shoots of this year
cut from well-bearing trees, are suitable for the scion. It is important to order them from official growers to ensure that the scions come from the right species.
Whip and tongue grafting
is the most common technique used to propagate the best walnut trees. When the graft and rootstock fit nicely, wrap the area together with an elastic band or tape for strength, and immerse the whole thing in grafting wax. This helps prevent dehydration and infection.
After following the above procedure
the result goes into the so-called hot-pipe callusing system. This system warms the graft union to about 80°F (27°C) and keeps the roots and buds on the scion cool (around 45°F) to prevent premature growth.
After three weeks
the young trees can be planted out, but ensure it is in frost-free conditions. With good care in the autumn, the result is a new variety of walnut with a length of 50 cm or more.
After just two or three years
you can have your first harvest from the new trees.
